THE CELLAR
Katarzyna Estate is located in the most southern part of Bulgaria. The region is extremely favourable for growing vines and is on the same latitude as some of the most famous wine regions in Europe. The cellar is located at the foot of the Eastern Rhodopa Mountain, just 2 km away from the border with Greece. The area is hilly, very picturesque and still charmingly wild.
The area is known for its ancient history and traditions. Sources of more than 5000 years, proves that the Thracians and Romans who lived in those lands, are engaged in Viticulture and Oenology.
The interesting architecture plan divides the cellar into three levels, which allows gravity transportation of grapes and wine from level to level.
TERROIR
The terroir is our great advantage. Within the boundaries of the estate, we have many different in quality and characteristics areas, which makes it possible to produce grapes with different indicators and respectively wines of various styles. Further, soil and climate determine the specific taste and ripening of grapes in specific regions, micro regions or individual spots. The specifics of the terroir dominate the characteristics of the variety, making the well-known Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot or Chardonnay different from one another.
The terroir of the region is recognized for its excellent red wines and unique white wines.


CLIMATE & SOILS
Katarzyna Estate is located in the region with the longest sunshine in Bulgaria. The duration of sunshine is over 3000 hours during the year and 110 clear days.
The climate is temperate continental. Its characteristics is the warm summer, the mild winter and no spring frosts. The average annual rainfall is 586 mm.
Within the boundaries of the estate the soils are sandy, sandy-clay and clay-limestone soils.
VINEYARDS
Katarzyna Estate owns 750 ha of vineyards situated at the so called White soil area. All vines were planted between 2004 and 2007, after a careful study of the soil and the climatic specificities of the individual plots. The ratio between red and white varieties is 70 to 30. The planting density is from 413 to 550 vines per ha.
The different areas in our vineyards gives the opportunity for a large number of different batches of wines which are used to shape the final products.The altitude varies from 187 to 210 meters.
The white grapes varieties are Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Sémillon, Pinot Gris, Traminer, Viognier, and Muscat. The red varieties are Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Malbec, Cabernet Franc, Mavrud, Rubin, Carménère and Grenache.

SIGHTSEEING
Only few kilometres from the the winery are the walls of one of the best preserved medieval castles in Bulgaria. The construction of the fortress was made in the end of the eleventh century, during the reign of the Byzantine Emperor Alexios I Komnenos (1081-1117). The castle is conceived as a solid fortification unit, where there was an intense life. The fortress has the functions of border guard fortress and has protected territories between the rivers – Maritsa and Arda.
About 10 km from the winery, near the village Mezek rises one of the most magnificent tombs in Thrace. It dates back to IV century b.c. and is completely preserved in its authentic form. The tomb was discovered accidentally by local residents in 1931. The total length of the facility is 30.33 m. In the tomb were found a large number of objects made of gold , bronze, iron, glass and ceramics.
