From May 28th to 30th, 2024, in Naoussa, Greece, the 14th edition of the Balkan International Wine Competition took place. KATARZYNA ESTATE won 6 medals for its wines, among which a DOUBLE GOLD for Katarzyna Rubin 2022, which was also rated with a fantastic 94 points out of 100. Cheval Mavrud 2023 was rated 90 points and received a gold medal, while silver medals were awarded to Le Rose 2024, Le Magnifique Chardonnay 2022, Katarzyna Ballade Cabernet Sauvignon & Syrah 2021, and Katarzyna Mavrud 2022.
THE BALKAN INTERNATIONAL WINE COMPETITION is the first of its kind forum focused on the wines of the Balkans. It is held annually and aims to draw the attention of the global wine community to this fascinating and unique region.
The competition was launched in 2012 and was founded by Galina Niforou and Konstantinos Lazarakis MW, the first Master of Wine from the Balkan Peninsula and Southeastern Europe. After serving as chairman of the jury for nine years, he passed the role to Igor Lukovic from Serbia. Over 1,000 wines from various countries competed for the prestigious medals in 2025.
Over the past six years, the competition has been hosted by various Balkan countries such as Serbia, North Macedonia, Romania, Turkey, and, of course, most frequently in Bulgaria. In 2025, the forum took place in Greece from May 28th to 30th in Naoussa.
